Algae Control

Algae Control using Barley Straw

Barley Straw

Algae Information

Common Names

  • Blue Green Algae
  • Blanketweed Filamentous

Algae or Blanketweed Filamentous is very unsightly and is increasing in waters due to nutrient concentrations as a result of human activity and natural processes. There is demand to improve the quality of waters across the country and therefore the algae needs controlling for environmental, recreational and health reasons.

Herbicidal treatment and mechanical removal are not options for controlling the algae, so we at Aquatic Solutions recommend algae control using barley straw rafts, as it is a natural environmentally friendly method of control to reduce algae in UK waters.

Problems Caused By Algae

Listed below are some reasons that the algae in your waters should be treated sooner rather than later;

  • Can impede the flow in drainage systems
  • Block pumps and sluices
  • Interferance with navigation, fishing and other recreation
  • Cause taint and odour problems
  • Block filters
  • In some instances can create a health hazard to humans, livestock and wildlife

How Barley Straw Works

When the straw starts to decompose it releases a natural chemical into the water which inhibits the growth of algae. The barley straw raft will last for as long as the straw takes to decompose, usually lasting between 4 to 10 months depending on water temperature. The effects of the decomposition will have no effect to the fish or any invertebrates within the lake, in fact quite the opposite, oxygenated straw will provide good habitat for invertebrates which in turn provides food for the fish.
